About Iqbal Dhaliwal

Iqbal Dhaliwal is the Global Executive Director of J-PAL, a network of centers worldwide whose mission is to fight poverty and climate change through evidence informed policy. Based at MIT’s economics department, he works with the Board to develop the organization’s strategic vision, and with the leadership of the regional offices to coordinate field research, policy outreach, capacity building, and operations worldwide. He is also the Co-Director with Esther Duflo of J-PAL’s South Asia office and with Abhijit Banerjee of the Innovation in Government Initiative (IGI). He is a board member of the NGO Noora Health, and a member of 'Group of Experts' convened by the Chief Minister of Punjab, India to develop the post-COVID economic strategy for the state.

Before joining J-PAL in 2009, Iqbal was a director of economic analysis at a consulting firm, where he managed projects in antitrust, regulation, and strategy. Earlier as a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), he worked as a Deputy Secretary in a state government, director of a statewide welfare department, CEO of a publicly owned company and head of an administrative sub-division. He has an MPA in International Development from Princeton University and a Masters in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.
